October 17, 2017 Session
Recap
The session started with our adventurers assembled in the Farthing Yards in Highbridge, awaiting instructions from Martin Shimlock. Each of the adventurers is there to discharge a debt owed to Martin.
The previous evening, casual acquaintances and semi-regular drinking buddies Bakdor Hammerwang, Dawngreeter Yornan Hawklight, and /wiki/spaces/CAM/pages/74285137 had a violent encounter with Polonian tax collector Pierre de Duckwood and two guards. The three Polonians, all employees of the Southern Mercantile Company, had entered Gronth's blacksmith shop and were physically accosting him. The adventurers enacted a certain amount of vigilante justice and killed all three Polonians. Faced with possible reprisals against them and their village, the group contacted Martin Shimlock, presumed member of The Resistance, for help. He offered to clean the site and dispose of the bodies in exchange for a favor.
Rhagal and Ser Shadow, possibly cousins, also turned out to repay a favor to Martin, but for undisclosed reasons.
It turned out that Martin had arranged to provide caravan guards to Polonian caravan master Percy du Ramshead to secure a shipment headed to Greenmouth from Highbridge. The adventurers were provided a few trinket magic items, a map, and instructions to seize the caravan and deliver it to a green barn about a day and a half into the mission. The wagon full of weapons was mentioned to be of particular significance. The full collection of workers associated with the caravan were Caravan Master Percy du Ramshead; his Guard Captain Zinedine the Caravan Guard; four native Riding folk that hired out as itinerant guards, Abel, Baker, Charlie, and Ahwschit; and the five adventurers.
Immediately upon the group meeting each other, Zinedine attempted to intimidate Bakdor, resulting in an errant swing of Bakdor's axe and a counterpunch from Zinedine that knocked Bakdor to the ground. The fisticuffs continued that evening, as after making camp, Zinedine and Bakdor squared off in a wrestling match during which an exhausted Zinedine barely triumphed over Bakdor. After the fight ended, Zinedine headed off into the woods, presumably to recover, while Abel took the first guard shift and the others prepared for sleep. The group decided that this was their best chance to steal the caravan. As Yornan distracted Abel, Rhagal slipped into the woods, found Zinedine kneeling by a small stream, and stabbed him in the back. Zinedine responded by attacking Rhagal, the camp awoke, and everyone ran to Rhagal's aid. Zinedine was quickly dispatched, with Rhagal dealing the final blow.
The melee continued, and as Abel was magically Held, Baker and Ahwschit were killed, and Charlie attempted to escape. By this point, Percy had climbed atop his caravan wagon and began casting magic missiles at the party. Yornan and Bakdor followed Percy up on top of the wagon and dealt a series of grievous blows, forcing Percy to fire a warning signal into air and flee into woods. Ser Shadow located the escaping Percy with a summoned owl, but as the party crashed through the woods, Percy heard the pursuit and cast another spell to escape. By this point, Gronth had forced Charlie to surrender.
As the party debated killing Abel and Charlie, the two guards overheard and ran for the woods, hoping to escape what appeared to be imminent death. The party chased them and Charlie was cut down but Abel escaped.
The party decided to attempt to disguise what had happened by loading the bodies into the two wagons that didn't contain weapons and burning the entirety of them. The party decided to travel throughout the night, hoping to deliver the remaining wagon. Concerned about discovery, the party eventually decided to hide the wagon in small copse of trees a few miles from the road, hide it beneath a pile of branches and leaves, and send Yornan and Rhagal to the rendezvous point with news that they had secured the wagon but were unable to deliver it to the intended destination.
Yornan and Rhagal avoided Polonian patrols led by Percy du Ramshead that were scouring the trade road in hopes of finding the wagons and the perpetrators of the attack. Yornan and Rhagal eventually arrived at the barn, told their story, and were informed that The Resistance would handle the situation from here, providing each party member with a small reward for their help.
Martin left the party with an invitation to track him down if they wanted more work, offering potential jobs associated with assassinations, expeditions to look for additional magic items, or other potential activities. He said he could be found at Wauver's Wagon Works which is located in the Narrows in Highbridge.
