Brotherhood of the Coast
The Brotherhood of the Coast is a loose term encompassing the pirates that sail The Stygian Blue. Many pirates belong to well-organized bands. Others are drunken brigands that can be hired out of the alehouses of Port Royale. Some captains have banded together to form a free nation on the island of Tortuga and they obey and enforce a strict code of behavior. Others are lawless marauders with no morals at all.
All the people that live on the shores of The Stygian Blue are well aware of the most notorious Brotherhood of the Coast. Depending upon your lot in life, these pirates might be heroes or villains, they could be customers to indulge or raiders to defend against, and they might be people that you interact with every day or just stories from a more exciting world over the horizon.
Those that fly the black are often to be found at the pirate capital of Tortuga. Many call upon the port of Port Royale to sell their plunder. Polonians in Portobello or Vichy d'Or might curse their names. Very few would dare to slander pirate captains of this renown, so while the truth of the stories recounted within is unknown, it is hard to fathom that they are not true.
Pirate Colors
Most pirate ships are said to either âfly the blackâ or âfly the redâ. Those that âfly the blackâ are proclaiming their adherence to the Pirate Code of Tortuga. These pirates can be expected to accept the surrender of ships willing to be boarded and respect the sanctity of Port Royale and Tortuga. Pirates that âfly the redâ do as they please and respect the code or not as it suits them.
The High Table at Tortuga only seats captains that âfly the blackâ.
