The Dark Times
For hundreds of years, the people living on the islands and shores of the Stygian Blue were simple farmers and fisherman laboring under the yoke of Lord Tyranus. His armored minions, the Death Guard, terrorized the populace. The Troopers might arrive at a village at any time of the year, demanding tribute in the form of food and goods, sometimes beyond the ability of the village to provide. Poorer villages suffered from constant poverty and teetered on the edge of starvation in an attempt to fulfill the tribute demands. Failure to comply often resulted in retribution in the form of death and destruction. Compliance often resulted in starvation and disease. Every year, villages would cease to exist, damaged beyond repair, the few survivors disbanding and searching for sager environs.
Richer villages fared little better. They were often forced to feast the troopers on their arrival and vacate their homes in order to provide sleeping quarters. The minions of Lord Tyranus frequently caused damage to property, assaulted villagers, and in the face of any resistance, offered swift and devastating retribution.
But, even that was not the worst. Priests in the service Lord Tyranus and whatever fiendish god they served would appear at villages and instruct troopers to abduct certain inhabitants. Young children were frequent targets, but women of childbearing age were common targets also. Every family living on the shores of the Stygian Blue could point to an aunt or cousin or grandchild that had been stolen away.
